Narrative

The way in which toy story 3’s narrative is structured is that it follows the theory of todorov, it starts off with a equilibrium of ‘Andy’ the owner of the toys is going off to college and has grown apart from his toys, the disequilibrium is that the toys find out that they are being donated to a children’s play centre. To make matters worse for the toys they are made to feel unwanted by their ‘friend’ woody who has been chosen to go to college with Andy. The movie is then made to have an attempt to repair the damage this is done by one of the toy’s taking lead roll to help the toys get back to their rightful owner. At the end of the movie the new equilibrium is made and the toys return back to their owner.

The way in which the audience are positioned is that they feel as if they have an emotional bond with the toys and hope that they make it back to Andy, the emotions of the audience changes throughout the course of the movie this is for the reason that the toys go through moments in which returning back to Andy does not look possible.

The characters in toy story 3, are represented is in a manner of it’s a patriarchal society, this is made apparent by the males ‘saving the day’ this was done in the movie as the protagonist were buzz and woody, Jessie, Barbie and the sheep woman found themselves in distress at times in which it was up to buzz or woody to come and save them, in addition a dominant and alternative representation was made of males this was shown because you have buzz light year which is seen to be the muscle man and takes charge were ever possible and you have the alternative representation of a man in which you see ‘ken’ who is portrayed as a girls toy and seems to almost be gay.

As toy story is a sequel those that have been watching toy story from when it first started would know who the good guys are (hero’s) ‘buzz & woody’ however the villain always changes in toy story 3 it was lotso who is a an banded bear and has no trust in anybody and will do whatever to get him to a better place.
The role of sound plays a big part in the movie this is because the primary target audience are kids of the age of 4-15 this movie as a huge appeal to kids of this age group and as a 4 year old may not be familiar with certain words the sounds used help them to know what certain words could mean.
